INTERSECTION OF HIV
AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN & GIRLS
CULTURES OF VIOLENCE
"Power
and violence are opposites; where the one rules absolutely,
the other is absent. Violence appears where power is in jeopardy,
but left to its own course it ends in power's disappearance." |
- Hannah Arendt

Women celebrating after a day of working to end violence
Women are making huge strides all over the world. Women have achieved political power, status, money, and celebrity and have made critical differences in the way business is done around conference tables, negotiating tables and in courts everywhere. Yet, we live in the midst of a global culture of Violence Against Women.
Women in many parts of the world and in many cultures are still perceived merely as vehicles for childbearing, as property, sex objects, spoils of war and the vectors of misery. Violence against them is condoned, excused or justified on fallacious grounds. When Violence Against Women and Girls and HIV infection go hand in hand, life becomes doubly dangerous.
But wherever we go in this world, there are beautiful amazing women going about their day, going about their lives, making significant contributions to their families, their workforces, and the beauty if the world. Intersect believes in women and when women believe in themselves they are unstoppable.
Women Have the Power to Change the Fabric of Their Cultures.
